Photochemotherapy of Psoriasis

Abstract
Photochemotherapy denotes a therapeutic approach that is based on the interaction of light and a photoactive drug. The rationale of photochemotherapy in psoriasis is the inhibition of the increased DNA synthesis within the psoriatic lesions by the interaction of psoralen molecules and light energy in the UVA range (320-400nm). This study describes the efficacy of the photochemotherapy, using orally administered methoxsalen and long wave ultraviolet light in 7 patients with severe, generalized psoriasis. The results were as follows. 1) There was complete clearing of 3 patients(43%) after 15 irradiation times, and partial clearing in 6 patients(86%) after 10 irradiation times. 2). Side effects observed in this study were pigmentation, erythema, pruritus, nausea and Koebner phenomenon.
